Introducing the EUC PLS expert team: MUDr. Jaroslav Kalina, our general practitioner (2)

MUDr. Jaroslav Kalina works as a general practitioner at EUC PLS. After graduating from the 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague, Jaroslav Kalina worked as an internist with focus on cardiovascular diagnostics (ergometry, Holter blood-pressure monitoring and ECG recording, functional cardiovascular tests – e.g. head-up tilt table test, endothelial function tests) and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, particularly arterial hypertension. He then worked for a long time in pharmaceutical research of cardiovascular medications. After returning from parental leave, which he took as one of the few men in his time to do so, he joined the orthopaedic department and worked as an orthopaedist, including operations, for two years.

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children."

Over the past ten years, MUDr. Jaroslav Kalina has worked in two related fields, namely occupational medical services and as a general practitioner for adults.

In his work, MUDr. Kalina draws on the experience of combining all of the fields that currently concern the majority of patients and workers – musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular diseases (and diagnosis and treatment thereof) – and he encounters daily surprises. Each person he assesses is a unique story that he must analyse while taking into account the fact that treatment or the medical opinion issued along with the assessment can fundamentally change the patient’s professional and personal life.

In his personal life, he enjoys learning and enhancing his expertise. He also enjoys listening to music, especially post-rock, and reading modern progressive gender literature.

Life motto:

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children.

What kind of problems did MUDr. Jaroslav Kalina most frequently encounter when performing occupational medical examinations?

MUDr. Kalina most frequently registered deficiencies in the examination request form and in the medical assessment of fitness to work form. Particularly for employers, any mistakes are very dangerous, especially forensically: the examination is carried out according to the submitted request. The risks of the work environment and errors in these areas (e.g. risks stated incorrectly) are fully the employer’s responsibility. The job candidate/employee’s obligation is “merely” to arrive for the examination at the scheduled time. For example, if he/she submits a form for the examination with risks that do not correspond to reality, the examination in relation to the incorrectly stated risks is "invalid" or, better said, the employee works in the context of the stated risk without a valid examination and incurs all of the consequences associated with that.

And which error in the examination request form did MUDr. Jaroslav Kalina consider to be the “most serious”?

A blank form with no risks listed or a form containing risks that are filled in by the employee or that another employee (e.g. a superior or administrator) fills in based on their own consideration, e.g. an evaluation of employees’ physical burden by means of estimation (a driver’s assistant will have a category 3 burden because he carries boxes), rather than using authorised measurement with approval from the relevant health authority.

EUC PLS carries out an initiation examination for each client when concluding a contract on provision of occupational medical services. The result of the initiation examination is, among other things, the formulation of a medical examination system, which is dependent on the employer’s cooperation and takes into account all of the risks associated with the given job. This minimises, to the greatest extent possible, incorrect completion of the request for an occupational medical examination on the part of the employer, and MUDr. Jaroslav Kalina encounters these problems very rarely in connection with the performance of occupational medical examinations.
